First Experiences on the Law of Attraction

Today was been a very interesting day. No, I take that back. The last two days have been very interesting days, because both of them have shown me major intellectual challenges, of different aspects and types. Today and yesterday I spent probably a combined total of 10 hours or so working on music, at least 7 of those hours has been spent recording. During that time, my friend Chris and I began working together on songs for the first time in a long time. The reason we stopped was that I wanted to pursue other areas of my own music, but what I’ve come to realize, in part, is that working with Chris to improve his music, in terms of his overall knowledge, skill, practice, etc. will be beneficial to me in that I’ll have had the experience of working with someone else on music, I’ll have furthered my knowledge of recording, and I’ll also have the means necessary to carry out new inspiration on my own projects. So it has been mutually beneficial, and I’m still learning some more, mostly through rote practice. When you’ve got little money, and little time – rote practice, and very thick and heavy rote practice at that, is what you do.
But the thing that has really been changing my entire perspective during the course of these past two days with the musical recording, the slice of homework and school studying, has been this idea I’ve recently been coming to terms to understand called: the Law of Attraction. The Law of Attraction simply states that whatever you think of, you will attract that to you. It is interesting, because I remember reading in Win Wenger’s book, The Einstein Factor, that, “the first rule of behavioral psychology is whatever you reinforce, you will get more of.” Kind of an interesting parallel. But when we’re talking about the Law of Attraction, we’re not just talking about behavior, and we’re also not simply talking about psychology, or the mind. We’re talking about the universe.
Many of you who already have experience with the Law of Attraction might know some of the people who have really put the message of it out there – Jack Canfield, Paul Scheele, Steve Pavlina, Fred Alan Wolf, James Arthur Ray, and many more. All of these guys have incredible stories to tell about both their lives and also how they’ve come to show others the Law of Attraction; how what you think can alter the way your life turns out.
Now, I’m a studying student of Religious Science, a religion that states a number of specific beliefs, such as the non-existence of good or evil outside of subjectively based decision, the concept of sin being a lack of fulfillment of your fullest potential, Jesus Christ not being a “Savior,” but instead being an ordinary man of surpassing spiritual knowledge, and so on. One of the most interesting components of this belief system, though, is its tendency to come back again and again to the idea that you, I, and we are God.
Steve Pavlina, in his 16th podcast entitled The True Nature of Reality, describes a central, critical, yet all too often forgotten viewpoint on life. Science, whether you’re talking about the exact sciences, the social sciences, or what have you, are all based on an assumption that that there is some objective reality, or that the universe follows specific, unchangeable rules. But, he argues, how can we know this? How can you really know that there is any existence of anything outside of what you directly experience? You know that text exists here, because you can see it, right here on the screen or on paper or what have you – you know it’s there because it is within your direct awareness, your direct experience. But how do you know, when you look away, when you turn from it, that it actually still exists?
In quantum physics, this seemingly odd nature of observation and existence is usually referred to as superposition – the idea that unless you’re going back to check on it, an object or objective can exist in an infinite number of locations until once again observed. Speaking in terms of our direct experience, under what we directly know, we cannot, with 100% proof, and not even with a lot of evidence at all, prove this to be untrue. How do we really know that an object exists in the same way, in the same place, or even exists at all when we are not directly observing it? Until you read this text, how do you know that the text ever existed prior, or will actually exist after?
Much of our daily decisions and experiences stem from our past experiences. Often when we encounter a situation, we’ll call up a memory or at least some associative experience that will aid us in forming a conclusion and moving on with a decision. The problem with our past experience, is that like anything else, we have no way of knowing whether or not our past experience is truly accurate, whether or not it ever existed in the first place, or whether or not it even came to us at all prior to this current point. For all you know, you could have woken up this morning with a whole batch of memories, not having existed yesterday, or yesterday not having existed either, and you’d still not know the difference, because those memories were there when you woke up. You know who you are because of what came before, and what came before is only theoretical because you have no way of actually proving that yesterday existed at all. You might think that you could go and ask others, “Did I exist yesterday?” but again – they are part of that entire experience as well, and you have no way of knowing whether or not they truly existed either. You were either unconscious prior to waking up, and therefore couldn’t know, or for that matter, once again, your memory just isn’t present experience, it is not direct observation or any kind of observation in general, at all!
All that you have to base anything off of, is your own observation, and your own perceptions. Anything else, for all practical purposes, and to the point that there can actually be proof shown, is not present, because there is no way of guaranteeing it ever, does at the present moment, or will ever exist because you do not have sight or perception of it.
Keeping all of this in mind, we can then come to the idea that, as far as you are concerned, there is only one consciousness. Your consciousness is the only consciousness you know; there is no way of verifying others’ consciousness, because you’re not them, and you have no way of experiencing it. You are bound to your physical body, and within those bounds, you have your own consciousness. Other people, other things, no matter what they are, are essentially projections of your own thoughts, your own vibrations, your own consciousness and perceptions. They cannot be said, with absolute certainty beyond any shadow of a doubt to be anything “more than a simulation,” because you have no way of verifying they are anything but! You can go and talk to them, interact with this world in which you project, but essentially there is no way of knowing if any of it truly exists, or at least, exists from the point of being a consciousness exactly like your own.
If you project the world around you, if you create your own subjectively based reality, then that also means that you are the creator. You are the sole responsible soul of all that is created in that reality – the reality of your consciousness and the projections you perceive from that consciousness. This means two things: 1.) You have complete control over everything. 2.)Anything that already exists and that you attempt to deny will be to contradict your own projection. So if you’re sick, you’ve got the flu and you’re throwing up, or something like that, you cannot simply refute it and say, “No, this isn’t happening right now, I am completely healthy,” and expect the very next second for anything to be at all different, because that is denying your very own projection that you’re already experiencing in that present moment! To create one thing, project it into your reality, and then to deny that it exists is just silly.
Still, this is where the whole thing gets quite confusing. Because while you create everything, you don’t seem to decide on everything that is created. You have total control over all that is created within your reality, yet you cannot fully witness and oversee all of that control. The unconscious takes care of a vast amount of this entire ordeal for you, and consciously you likely have limited ability in overcoming it, but that too, might be an assumption, so who knows? With the Law of Attraction, often it is better at times to shrug, say you don’t know, and then experiment with things, see what happens.
If you think of illness, you’ll attract illness. If you think of health, you’ll attract health. But just thinking it does not get you anywhere does it? As has been said, it’s not like a guy can just sit on the couch all day watching t.v. and say: “Look, I know I may be watching television all day, but it’s alright – I’ll just manifest whatever I need in my reality and the rest will take care of itself.” It cannot be done this way. Why? Because again, going back to that entire concept of what you know, without a shadow of a doubt, what you can prove; only your own experience and perceptions can be known. And part of what is known is that you can feel or have anything and everything happen to your physical body from which your consciousness resides. To ignore that physical body while attempting to attract anything would be to turn things in on themselves, and either nothing happens, or you start attracting something you didn’t really intend.
Part of the entire intention-manifestation process, is learning to act as if you already own whatever it is that is attempting to be manifesting it. You’ve got to own it, see it, play & experiment to achieve it, and also importantly you must be persistent, because to be inconsistent means that you were at one point not fully believing, not fully attracting anything, and again – if you’re looking at that presently to the past, it could mean it never existed in the first place either.
Looking back on my life, I realize that everything I’ve ever done successfully(and also unsuccessfully) has been a direct result of the Law of Attraction. To achieve my goals with my film company, I created a plan for what my reality was to become, and then I did all the steps in taking action for that reality to manifest. The goal, the whole basis for the starting of my production company was that we would go through high school gaining knowledge, gaining a small following, learning what we needed, we’d take a break during college, get our careers together and then come back to start the film company with our newfound financial success. I have believed, from the start, that it is not only possible, but that it is going to happen. I took every step I possibly good action-wise and consciously to get to that point, and here I am…Barton Ct. Productions fully incorporated, a newfound company with its early successes, and now stagnant as I had forseen before and during college.
This very website, was created, in part, because of the fact that Barton Ct. during this time and possibly even in the future was not going to be a substantial medium from which to express my very own, and only my own, creative visions. Barton Ct. is focused more toward supporting other artists and taking in as many as possible under its wing, and so on, but Dirty Mechanism was really created out of a need to allow my own creative visions to come forward, to allow my own thoughts to be expressed uninterrupted, unfiltered. But is it really true that Barton could not have done that? Probably not, as Barton and all the people I knew with Barton are merely my own projections, right? Quite simply, I projected that Barton could not support the same content Dirty Mechanism does, and so Dirty Mechanism was born!
Some people would still be quite hesitant to open up to this way of thinking, and it’s funny, because in considering the Law of Attraction to truly be a law of attraction, it would mean that to deny the existence of the Law of Attraction is to attract the law of attraction not to exist, so why do that when we can easily use this way of thinking to generate a substantial amount of positivity in our lives? Whether you truly think this is the actual reality or not, or whether or not this is the best way to go about things, whether or not it even is the truth you can still live a life of happiness, joy, accomplishment, or whatever you want to create under this way of thinking.
I enjoyed this post. I was referred to this post from Steve Pavlina’s forums and it must have been you promoting your blog here through his forum. I did enjoy your post and it was very dense in content, but it was something I’ve heard before. It was almost a carbon copy of Steve Pavlina’s articles on this, so my question to you is: Is this a research paper or is it a blog post? I don’t mean to bring you down like this, but I guess I’m just tired of reading the same old stories about the law of attraction. I want something groundbreaking. No, I haven’t seen the Secret, but I really don’t plan on seeing it either. I just want to read someone with a unique perspective on this sort of thing. I’m not saying I could write a better blog post. I really don’t write too much about this sort of thing, but I do apply it on a regular basis. I give you props for writing, and I feel you’re trying to make a difference, so good job.
Andrew,
I totally understand what you’re saying about your desire for seeing something “groundbreaking.” Writing this post, for me, was more of a way to help sort out my thoughts on the Law of Attraction and also kind of to try and verify that I was getting this whole thing right.
I don’t intend to create “almost carbon copies,” of Steve’s blog posts, but Steve was one of the guys that helped me in understanding LoA, and I give mention to him in this post for those reasons.
Thinking of your question, what do you think would create something groundbreaking? What is the ‘groundbreaking’ piece you’re looking for? From my perspective, the Law of Attraction is very well groundbreaking within itself and the mere communication of the idea of it has the potential to drastically impact lives. It is a totally different way of viewing the world; what can we do to truly master the concept, to understand it?
What WOULD be groundbreaking if the LoA is not groundbreaking in itself? And are you expecting me to bring you the groundbreaking material?

Hi,
I dont know whether to believe this law of attraction thing or not. Although some thing tells me that It is true.
Actually it was when I read about non duality that everything changed for me.
So according to me , what happens in the law of attraction is that we assume and believe that we are at point A( which is umm, being poor and struggler or low self esteem) and we want to move to point B ( which is abundant and prosperous and charismatic).
At point A our beliefs were different and at point B our beliefs have become different and thus may attract the sort of things that we believe in now.i.e. at point B.
So, maybe all we have to do is to let go of the assumptions that we dont have certain things that we need or let go of the poverty beliefs.
Hec, no need to even let go. We just need to see that these are just beliefs which have somehow got there in our minds due to our environment or our conditioning.
I have now come to see that all there is , is just thoughts . What we believe ourselves to be is just a story. We believe that getting certain things is required for our happiness (even this is a belief). But we really dont know whether getting this or that would make us happy. It is only after getting the said thing that we realise that it was just an illusion and the thing doesnt make us any happier than before.
Whew, This comment of mine is getting too big.
Maybe I should just go and post this comment in my blog.
You could see it here at nonduality and manifestation
bye,
