Where I’ve Been - 9/27/07

Written by Scott Lee - Released September 27th, 2007

A lot of people may have noticed who frequent this website that I have not been updating as much as I regularly do, or for that matter, hardly at all this month. I’ve been busy - very busy. But let me talk a little bit about what has been going on. I’ve encountered a few very interesting topics during my time at college, and much of these ideas I’ve been learning about will probably find their way into my writings at some point. Things like introductory political science, which I believe even at its basic core lies the most important concepts any of us need to consider. Other things like the misinterpretation of history, and the evolution of popular culture over time. Or perhaps, last but not least, the misunderstanding and overemphasis of sex in the grand scope of human interaction.

Some Thoughts on Pick Up Artists
There is an entire society developed around that of pick up artists, individuals who seek to seduce women purely through the use of what could probably be considered the real life Jedi mind tricks. The Principles of Seduction that I’ve taught in a brief introduction sort of series need to be expanded upon.

I recently found myself watching almost the entire marathon of The Pick-Up Artist, a recently produced reality show on VH1, and what I saw there made me feel uncomfortable. “Pick up artists” are quickly rising to the top of popular culture and chances are that they will easily drop straight back down with shows like this. Using the same conversation openers over and over again, telling lies and being a false character, referencing to events that never happened - it’s all deceptive, and it betrays the idea I believe that good seduction happens on the basis of both parties having long term benefit. Sleeping with a girl for short term relations is pointless, fruitless, and completely without intellectual merit. One night stands are usually two people feeding off each other’s insecurities.

The true pick up artist is not someone that you will need to watch out for. It’s not someone that if you study their methods and know what they’re doing you will even catch what they’re doing. For instance, one of my ex-girlfriends continuously remarked to me over time even after our three month relationship had ended that she ‘never knew when it was I was being me or just using my techniques.’ The correct answer should always be that you were being you and using seduction techniques. If you are a human being with any tiny inkling of a heart you will enter into a relationship because it provides benefits to both parties, not for your own personal selfish gain. History may show that self interest is prominent, and PUA teachers tend to emphasize how guys are wired ‘by nature,’ but that does not mean that self interest is the reason we are all here today. Mutual benefit is the key to progressive and prosperous human evolution. That applies to everything, especially romantic relationships.

My Major Future Project
I have a major future project that I am working on. I have already announced in some places that I am working on yet another book, but that is not it. I have also announced that my existing book, The Island of Yellow will get a second edition and a possible submission to numerous major publishers, but that is not the major project either. I’ve been working on a musical album and I have finally begun to get comfortable with my sound musically, but no - again, that is not the major project. Everyone already knows I am going through college to major in psychology, and as funny as it would be to state the obvious, it is ANOTHER major project besides that. But what is it? Do you want to know? I hope all of you do, and I hope you all stick around! All I can tell my readers for now is that it has great potential, it will be empowering to many people, and it is not something that you will want to miss.

And on that note…
Dirty Mechanism is now trying to contribute to something of a noble cause. The month of October is breast cancer awareness month, and in conjunction with this I’ve launched the first campaign ever to contribute proceeds of Dirty Mechanism’s profits to charity. The majority of the work is still to come on this project, but it is going to be an ongoing process long after October has passed. From around this time and onward, you will be able to buy certain products, a portion of your money will go to causes to help improve the quality of life everywhere. Breast cancer is just the beginning, I also plan to make products that will allow people to essentially spread the word on other topics while also contributing to charities like AIDS, education, and who knows? Perhaps I’ll even start doing giveaways on money or something, it is still something to think deeply about.

But Let’s Not Undermine College…
My major has been a continuous, steady project of mine for some time now, and it seems that it will continue to be, for years to come. If I really push myself under my current schedule, it is possible that I could have a PhD in 5 to 7 years. But the more time presses on, the more I struggle with myself to settle on grounds for a dissertation. My interests in the human mind and human potential are not at all the same of what they were just two years ago, who knows what they will be when the time comes to write a PhD dissertation! Universities give amazing opportunities, and unless I am willing to adapt under certain conditions I may or may not desire, conducting research, or even scientific experimentation under the grounds of contributing to obtain my PhD is somewhat troubling. Research and experimentation is something I want to do in the future on a long term basis at times.

Other times, research does not seem so appealing as simply working with other people and helping them on their way. Still, research has limitless potential. If we continue to learn, continue to grow, continue to discover not only what is possible but also what is immediately obtainable, we could make leaps forward of where we would normally be. It’s a tough question, but one thing that is for certain is that I already am enjoying working with people to improve their lives like I kind of used to lately. The difference this time is that I feel much more equipped, and not so ridiculously sure of myself as I have been during times in the past.

Today in class I asked an interesting question. The question arose during the discussion of the effects by hormones on behavior in terms of how they affect the brain. Do human beings need hormones to survive? What function do the hormones estrogen and testosterone provide beyond simply that of gender expression? To what degree do hormone changes affect the brain and human behavior, and to what degree are we left as a “default” slate without the interaction of hormones with the brain? These may seem like many questions, but they could easily be consolidated into one: Do we understand hormones and how they affect our behavior in the scope of our necessary characteristics required for survival?

The response the instructor gave me was of course an interesting one. I pointed out that our teeth are used for chewing, our rib cage is used for protecting our internal organs, our fingers can grasp things, our tongue can taste good or bad foods, but do hormones simply make us moody and give us emphasized gender expressions? All of this is open to question. We have studied all the different systems of the body in modern time, are only just recently beginning to understand certain things in the vast scope of medical and scientific knowledge. Once again, human beings seem to be a little astray on their priorities.

If you want to have a good society and you are using money as a tool to elevate that process, I’ve always been under the belief that under that logic most money should go to education in most global societies. It doesn’t. If you want to understand how to achieve world peace, enlightenment, or even understand how we can correct human problems, shouldn’t we be studying the human heart and mind more thoroughly before looking into anything else? And very similarly, if we are supposed to understand the inner depths of human sexuality, human personality, and overall human behavior wouldn’t it make sense to be spending a great deal of time studying the neuro-chemical effects of hormones instead of investigating things like average penis size? Aren’t there more important things to be looking after? Where is the money going?
